IRIS
New identity, brand architecture and website
With the transformation of CREB (Center for Research in Biomedical Engineering) into IRIS – Institute for Research and Innovation in Health, a new institutional chapter begins with the aim of expanding the centre’s impact, visibility and growth potential in the field of health technologies. The project reflects this shift: an expanded structure with thirteen research groups, a strategic location next to the future Hospital Clínic, and integration with UPC’s upcoming Faculty of Medicine.
At Toormix, we approached the challenge of creating a new brand that communicates this evolution —building a bold, flexible visual identity aligned with IRIS’s positioning as a leader in scientific innovation. The concept is rooted in the metaphors of light and connection: light represents knowledge, and its refraction symbolises how knowledge changes and multiplies when it interacts with innovation and technology.
This idea is captured in a liquid, dynamic symbol that adapts to every context as an organic, vibrant form —expressing the ever-evolving nature of science. The visual system is completed with a brand architecture that allows all research groups to be represented within a shared visual language, ensuring unity and recognition.
Typography also plays a key role: a primary typeface enhances the character and uniqueness of the IRIS name, while a secondary typeface brings clarity and hierarchy to research area naming and institutional communications.
The project also includes the design of core brand applications, materials for the public presentation of the new identity, and the design of the new institutional website, conceived as a clear and accessible tool to showcase the institute’s activity, teams, research projects, spin-offs and strategic vision.
With this new identity, IRIS positions itself as a forward-thinking, transformative institution within the Catalan health innovation ecosystem —a brand that visually expresses its commitment to knowledge, technological transfer and interdisciplinary collaboration.
